The Glock platform remains one of the most practical starting points for a USPSA Carry Optics pistol. It is reliable, affordable to maintain, easy to support with magazines and replacement parts, and capable of excellent performance when the setup is built around real match use instead of internet trends.
Our preferred Glock USPSA setup starts with a Gen 5 Glock 17, a direct-milled optic cut, a proven competition red dot, reliable magazines, and a trigger package that improves feel without sacrificing ignition reliability. The goal is not to build the most exotic pistol possible. The goal is to build a Glock that runs, tracks well, reloads cleanly, and keeps the dot mounted securely through high-round-count training and matches.
Quick Recommended Glock Carry Optics Setup
For most USPSA Carry Optics shooters, our preferred Glock competition build looks like this:
- Base pistol: Glock 17 Gen 5
- Optic mounting: direct-milled Glock optic cut with proper screw fitment
- Red dot: Holosun 507 Comp for value and performance, or Trijicon SRO for a premium competition option
- Trigger: Glock Performance Trigger-based setup with carefully selected supporting parts
- Magazines: quality Glock magazines with Henning extensions and the correct spring/follower setup
- Training tool: SBGW Target Focus Trainer for dry fire, live fire, and occlusion work
Why We Prefer the Glock 17 Gen 5
The Glock 17 Gen 5 is our preferred starting point because it gives the shooter a strong balance of slide weight, recoil spring length, reliability, and magazine compatibility. A Glock 34 can also work well, but the Glock 17 gives many shooters a clean balance between tracking, return, and overall handling.
Glock 45 and Glock 47 setups can also be built into capable match guns, but the Glock 17 remains our favorite starting point for a dedicated Carry Optics pistol because of its recoil system and full-size slide behavior. For shooters trying to build a simple, durable, high-round-count USPSA pistol, the Glock 17 Gen 5 is still hard to beat.
We also like the Gen 5 platform because the factory barrel and slide fit can be very good for a mass-produced pistol. When the gun is assembled correctly and paired with a solid optic mounting system, it can deliver excellent practical accuracy for USPSA-style shooting.
Direct Milling vs. MOS Plates
A direct-milled optic cut is one of the most important upgrades on a serious Glock Carry Optics build. Plate systems can work, but they add height and introduce additional screws, interfaces, and potential movement points. A properly machined direct cut places the optic lower and gives the optic a stronger mechanical relationship with the slide.
On our Glock optic cuts, the goal is to create a secure, repeatable mounting interface for proven optics such as the Holosun 507 Comp, Trijicon SRO, Holosun EPS, Vortex Defender XL, and other supported footprints. For RMR/SRO/Holosun C-Series and Holosun Comp footprints, a direct cut with proper recoil lug support is a major advantage for high-round-count practical shooting.
Best Red Dot Choices for a Glock USPSA Setup
The optic should be selected before the milling work is ordered. For a dedicated Carry Optics Glock, we generally recommend starting with one of the proven large-window competition optics.
Holosun 507 Comp Red
Our strongest value recommendation for most USPSA Carry Optics shooters. Large window, useful reticle options, good durability, and a strong fit for direct-milled Glock slides.
Holosun 507 Comp Green
Same competition-focused optic package with a green emitter for shooters who prefer a green dot in bright outdoor conditions or indoor lighting.
Trijicon SRO 5 MOA
A premium competition optic with a proven track record, large round window, and strong support history. A favorite for many serious practical shooters.

Magazine Setup: Capacity Without Giving Up Reliability
The Glock magazine system is one of the biggest reasons the platform works so well in USPSA Carry Optics. Factory Glock magazines are affordable, available, and reliable. With the right extension, spring, and follower setup, the gun can be configured for strong match capacity while still feeding consistently.
Our preferred setup uses Henning magazine extensions for Glock 17, 34, 19X, and 45 magazines. When configured with the MBX spring and follower option, this has been a proven setup for high-round-count Carry Optics use.
As always, confirm your magazines fit the correct gauge and match the rules for the division and match you are shooting. Reliability matters more than chasing one extra round if that extra round creates feeding problems or reload issues.
Trigger Setup: Better Feel Without Losing Reliability
A Glock USPSA trigger should be clean, predictable, and reliable. We do not want a fragile trigger setup that only feels good on the bench but becomes inconsistent under match conditions. For the Gen 5 platform, our preferred path is a Glock Performance Trigger-based system with proven supporting parts.
Overwatch Precision FALX Glock Performance Trigger Hybrid Kit
Our preferred competition trigger package for Gen 5 Glock builds, built around a GPT-based system with selected supporting parts.
Glock Performance Trigger
A strong starting point for shooters who want a cleaner Gen 5 trigger feel while staying with a Glock factory-based trigger system.
Apex Performance Connector for Glock
A supporting component option for shooters tuning the feel of a Glock trigger system.
Wolff Reduced Power Safety Block Plunger Spring
A small supporting part that can help improve trigger feel when used in the correct competition setup.
For a complete competition setup, we prefer using a proven package rather than randomly mixing parts without testing. The goal is a trigger that feels better, resets consistently, and still sets off primers reliably.
Supporting Glock Parts That Matter
The best Carry Optics Glock is not just an optic and trigger. Small supporting parts matter because they affect reloads, recoil behavior, and long-term serviceability.
- Glock reversible extended magazine catch — useful for clean magazine release access under pressure.
- Glock Gen 5 17/34 dual recoil assembly — a practical factory recoil assembly option for Glock 17 and 34 Gen 5 setups.
- Optic screws — correct screw fitment is critical on any direct-milled red dot setup.

Training With the Same Optic You Compete With
A red dot does not make a shooter faster by itself. The shooter still has to build presentation, target focus, visual patience, and the ability to track the dot through recoil. That is where occlusion training and dry fire become extremely valuable.
SBGW Target Focus Trainers are designed to help shooters train with the optic already mounted on the gun. They support dry fire, live fire, and occlusion-based work so the shooter learns to stay target-focused instead of staring at the dot.
Holosun 507 Comp / 407 Comp TFT Trainer
Recommended training companion for shooters running a Holosun 507 Comp or 407 Comp on a competition pistol.
Trijicon SRO TFT Trainer
A strong training option for SRO shooters who want to build target focus and visual discipline.
Vortex Defender XL TFT Trainer
Designed for shooters using the Vortex Defender XL footprint and window shape.

Complete Glock Carry Optics Build Path
If you are building a Glock for USPSA Carry Optics, use this order of operations:
- Choose the base Glock model, with the Glock 17 Gen 5 as our preferred starting point.
- Choose the red dot before selecting the optic cut.
- Order the correct Glock optic cut for that footprint.
- Use correct screws, clean threads, proper torque, and appropriate threadlocker.
- Set up reliable magazines with proven extensions, springs, and followers.
- Use a proven trigger package rather than chasing the lightest possible pull weight.
- Train with the optic using dry fire, live fire, and occlusion work.

Final Recommendation
For a serious but practical USPSA Carry Optics Glock, start with a Glock 17 Gen 5, direct mill the slide for the optic you actually plan to use, choose a proven competition red dot like the Holosun 507 Comp or Trijicon SRO, and build the rest of the gun around reliability.
The best match gun is not the one with the longest parts list. It is the one that runs every time, holds zero, reloads cleanly, and gives the shooter confidence through thousands of rounds of training and competition.
