This page explains current slide milling lead times, how to ship your slide or firearm to Stonebridge Gunworks, what to include in the package, and what to expect during the optic cut process.
Current Milling Lead Time
Lead time depends on the service selected and current workload. Need an updated estimate before ordering? Use live chat, or text/call 816-287-1122.
How to Ship a Slide for Milling
For slide-only services, you ship the slide to us. A slide without the frame is generally treated as a firearm part rather than a complete firearm.
- •Include your order number in the package.
- •Pack the slide securely in a box.
- •Do not include the barrel or recoil assembly — unless your service includes porting, in which case include the barrel.
- •Small parts may be left in the slide unless otherwise instructed.
- •Any small parts removed during service are tagged and reinstalled before return.
- •Sights removed for replacement or red dot installation are returned with your slide.
Do I Need to Send My Optic?
For most optic cuts the optic is not required — we cut to the optic footprint. For less common optics, we recommend sending it in. If you send your optic or purchase one with your order, we're happy to install it for you.

Shipping a Complete Firearm
Only for pre-approved, agreed-upon projects — for example, Shadow 2 trigger work or other one-off builds. Do not send a complete firearm for slide-milling-only work; ship the slide by itself.
Complete firearm shipments are subject to local laws and transfer requirements. Confirm current carrier policies before shipping (FedEx or UPS may require specific service levels, adult signature, or shipment through an FFL). If your firearm ships to us through an FFL, we can return it to that FFL — a new 4473 is generally not required at pickup. Include your order number and a copy of your photo ID, or the FFL license if shipped through an FFL.
California AB1263 Compliance
California customers sending a previously owned slide for optic cuts or milling must complete the required California compliance process before return shipment. This does not apply to SBGW Target Focus Trainers, range equipment, training tools, or non-firearm range accessories.
Full Recoil Lugs & Black Oxide Finish
When possible, our optic cuts use full recoil lugs to support the optic mechanically and mount it closer to how it was designed. If your slide is not stainless steel, we apply black oxide to the machined cut area only — leaving a black finish on the cut and helping prevent rust while keeping the factory finish on the rest of the slide.
