Getting Started

If you are interested in practical shooting in the Kansas City Area, this quick guide will show you where to find matches and how to get started. Listed below are the locations and times for every match held weekly and monthly.

The first step is to get out of your comfort zone and attend your first match. Once you arrive and relax, you will find a great group of people who want everyone to improve and have a good time. Practical shooting in the Kansas City area is a fantastic experience, offering numerous opportunities to participate in up to three matches a week.

Do not train beyond safe draw and gun handling forever, preparing for your first match as if you are training for the Olympics. You only need to be comfortable safely drawing, reloading, and walking around slowly with a loaded firearm during the course of fire.

You don't need to worry about setting up a gun for a specific division for your first couple of matches. Bring your most comfortable/reliable pistol, a holster, and 3-4 magazines with humble expectations, and you will have a great time. The most popular division in our area is Carry Optics, followed by Limited Optics. Bring what you have now, even if it is your carry gun; you do not need a competition gun to get started. Every setup has a division, as Open and PCC Divison cover everything else. For iron site guns, the divisions are Production and Limited.

Practiscore.com manages the scoring system for all the matches in our area. Shortly after the match, all scores are posted with detailed data, including draw and split times, scoring hits, stage times, and hit factor. All scores are ultimately based on Hit Factor. Hit Factor Scoring takes the total points you score on a stage divided by the time taken to shoot the stage. The ultimate goal is to score as many points through accuracy as efficiently as possible for your given skill set. You will learn by shooting matches how to build up your skills to be more efficient and accurately shoot better points. Hit Factor scoring is the pinnacle test of shooting practically, and the benefits of learning to shoot under this system are paramount for you to become a better shooter in life and many other disciplines.
